CITY TRIBUNE
Hybrid Film Fleadh with strong outdoor focus
The 33rd Galway Film Fleadh will take place from July 20-25, with screenings, talks and other events. These will take place in the cinema, outdoors in Galway City and online, via the festival website.
The opening film on July 20 is the European premiere of Here Before, a taut psychological thriller set in Northern Ireland, starring Andrea Riseborough (Mandy, Birdman) as a bereaved mother whose new neighbours stir up uncomfortable feelings of grief. It’s the feature debut of television writer and Belfast filmmaker Stacey Gregg.
The closing night film will be the world premiere of Untold Secrets, a documentary that gives voice to the survivors of Irish Mother and Baby Homes. It especially focuses on testimony of Anne Silke, who was fostered out of the now-infamous institution in Tuam that was run by the Bon Secours nuns. It’s directed by Galwegian/Spanish filmmaker, Teresa Lavina.
The city’s Pálás Cinema is reopening on July 16, ahead of the event and will be in use for the Fleadh.
In addition, up to 200 people will be able to enjoy socially distanced outdoor film screenings at Fr Burke Park, near the Claddagh, where filmmakers will be on hand to debut new work and take questions from the audience. Weather cover and headphones will be provided, should the need arise. Refreshments will also be provided. Seventeen of the festival’s 40+ feature film line-up, and three of its short programmes will be screened in Fr Burke Park.
