Hurling stroke aims at the White House
Michael Fahy has attempted a hurling stroke to Trump all strokes – by wrangling an invite to the White House for Galway’s hurling heroes!
The Ardrahan-based Independent County Councillor wants Galway senior hurling manager, Micheál Donoghue, and Galway minor manager, Jeffrey Lynskey, along with their All-Ireland winning squads, to parade their silverware in Washington for St Patrick’s Day next March.
Cllr Michael ‘Stroke’ Fahy said the two managers should introduce the victorious hurling teams to Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America, at the White House. He said they should go, “irrespective of who the president is”.
Cllr Fahy called on Chief Executive of Galway County Council, Kevin Kelly, to write to the Ireland Ambassador to America to arrange the reception at the White House on March 17 next year.
He pointed out that his fellow parish man, Ardrahan clubman Johnny Glynn, who was on the starting XV that beat Waterford in the final, had been commuting back and forth from the US all summer for training and matches.
Cllr Fahy’s proposal was greeted with hearty laughter during Monday’s County Council meeting, in which it was agreed the local authority will host a civic reception at County Hall for the Galway minor and senior hurling teams later this year.
Aidan Donoghue (FG) was one of many elected representatives, who congratulated the County Council for organising such a successful homecoming in Ballinasloe on September 4 for the Galway teams the day after they did the double.
Tomás Ó Curraoin (RSF), founder of Bearna/Na Forbacha hurling club, paid tribute to Council colleague Ivan Canning (FF), whose brother Joe was on the senior team, and nephew Jack was on the minor team.
Cllr Canning said it was an “emotional rollercoaster” over the past number of weeks, but he said it was important not to forget the achievements of the Galway minor and U16 camogie teams also.
