Hundreds to gather for Tuam babies vigil and march
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Hundreds of people are expected to gather in Galway and Dublin this evening to commemorate the Tuam babies.
796 children died at a Tuam-based mother and baby home run by the Bon Secours order between 1925 and 1961.
The events follow weeks of discussion about the death and burial of the children.
The government has announced a Commission of Inquiry into conditions at homes like the one in Tuam.
In Galway, pro-choice campaigners are hosting a vigil on Eyre Square.
Organiser Rachel Donnelly says it will be a commemoration, and not a protest.
In Dublin, a march will get underway at 7pm from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs to the gates of the Dáil
Organiser Hilary Minch says the names of the children will be read out and children’s clothes, toys and flowers will be laid at the gates.
