Hundreds of families facing homelessness

A HOUSING agency has warned that hundreds of city families could face homelessness as the number of people losing their jobs and finding it impossible to meet mortgage repayments is spiralling.

Staff at the Galway office of Threshold – which helps people with housing problems – have been innundated with appeals for assistance from families who are in serious difficulty with mounting mortgage and rent arrears.

And yesterday a Threshold spokesperson warned that things were almost certain to get worse, with the continuing threat to jobs – the number of people on the Live Register in Galway city has jumped by more than 5,000 in the past year.

Threshold is a national not for profit organisation that helps solve people’s housing problems in both the private and local authority sectors.
