Hundred year old Galway whiskey sells for £3,300 at auction

The owner of a 100 year old Galway whiskey is toasting his good fortune today – after selling the rare bottle in a UK auction house for £3,300.

The whiskey from HS Persse’s Nun’s Island Distillery in the city featured in McTear’s Rare and Collectible Whisky Auction in Glasgow yesterday.

The seller was a Dubliner whose father used to fix roofs for pubs and who was given the bottle some time back.

It was previously up for auction with a massive reserve of £100,000 in 2002, and not surprisingly it failed to sell.

The owner then thought it was the only bottle of its kind in the world, but McTear’s whisky specialist Dominic Hughes said it was still a very rare find.

“The only thing which would affect its price is it doesn’t have a capsule seal, which doesn’t affect the quality of the whiskey but does affect the value of the bottle. You can still see the original cork so it hasn’t been opened,” he said.
