Huge success for Galway at Connacht championships

Galway athletes had a very successful and enjoyable day out at the Connacht Championships in Sligo IT held Saturday last in changeable conditions.

Galway City Harriers had some fantastic performances, with Ava McKeon in formidable form at the championships, taking home four medals on the day demonstrating great ability over a range of events.

McKeon won the U-13 Girls Hurdles in 10.72 and the 600m in 1.49; took a silver medal in the 80m sprint; and anchored the 4x100m relay team to bronze medals, along  with team mates Kelsey Wall, Anna Lee, Isabella Burke and Rachel Fahy.

Isabella Burke had a fine performance to pick up the silver medal in the U-13 Girls’ 600m; while Richard McGrath and Shane Meagher of GCH teamed up to take gold in the U-11 Boys’ 60m with Richard running 9.56 and Shane 9.8. Juno Hayes and Elisa Jaime Stapleton, also GCH, teamed up to take bronze medals in the U-10 Girls 60m.

Craughwell AC had multiple winners and the most podium finishes of any club on the day.

In the U-13 Girls’, Aoibhe Fahy claimed gold in the javelin, with clubmate Millie Geraghty third; Jade Moorhead took silver in the high jump and bronze in the long jump; while Clodagh O’Meara won bronze in the 600m.

In the U-13 Boys’ category, Evan Hallinan had a stormer, with gold in the high jump , and three silvers in the hurdles, long jump, as well as being part of the 4x100m squad to relay silver.

Cian Lavan took silver in the high jump, and bronze in the hurdles.

Craughwell’s U-12 Girls had two victories, as Chloe Hallinan won gold in the long jump; and the 4x100m relay team of Grace Keaveney, Niamh Duffy, Grace Lynch, Chloe Hallinan also won gold.

Niamh Duffy claimed silver in the 60m; Chloe Hallinan won silver in the hurdles; and Jenny Cloonan took silver in the turbo javelin; and Grace Lynch took bronze in the long jump.

In the U-12 Boys’ category, there were gold medals for Evan Moran in the 60m Hurdles and Conor Gilligan in the long jump; while Eddie Silke claimed bronze in the 600m.

In the U-11 Girls’, the pair of Ella Farrelly and Jessica Ross won silver in the long jump; and Tara Keane and Mollie Gilligan took silver in the turbo javelin. Sara Craven and Sophie McIlrath were second in the 600m; while the U-11 Boys’ pair of Darragh Kelly and Sean Lavan placed third in the long jump.

In the U-10 Girls’ events there were silver medals for the pairs of Kelly Hallinan & Katelyn Walsh in the 500m; and Katelyn Walsh & Emma O’Donovan in the Long Jump; while the 4x100m relay squad were third winning bronze
