A secret HSE West report has found that the effects of cutbacks to health services have alarming consequences.

It claims that budgetary cuts and the recruitment embargo pose an alarming risk to mothers and babies, elderly patients and the mentally ill.

The report also reveals that standards of breast cancer treatment have fallen in the HSE West region – which includes Galway University Hospitals.

The ability to comply with standards of quality has been “seriously curtailed” in acute hospitals, according to the report.
