Date Published: 27-Nov-2012
The HSE has moved to clarify the key actions taken by University Hospital Galway following the death of Savita Halappanavar last month.
Members of the HSE West regional forum were briefed at this afternoon’s meeting of the forum at Merlin Park Hospital.
Members also voted to postpone calls for a public inquiry on the 31 year olds death UNTIL the results of the other investigations are revealed.
Members heard on Oct 30th the HSE’s national incident management team was verbally notified followed by a formal notification on November 1st. UHG then began the process of udentifying clinicians and preparing terms of reference,
He added that on November 14th the HSE confirmed that the National Incident Management team would oversee the investigation, and the internal review was subsumed into that process.
In response, City Councillor Catherine Connolly queried why it had taken the HSE a full month to clarify its actions, and questioned the silence until the tragedy was later reported on in a national newspaper.
Members then discussed the incident at length but were in general consensus that they should hold fire on calling for a public sworn inquiry.
