HSE WEST LUNG DISEASE TREATMENT TO EASE PRESSURE ON HOSPITAL BEDS
Date Published: 18-Sep-2012
Patients suffering from lung diseases (COPD) are set to benefit from a new home based treatment programme being rolled out by Galway University Hospitals which could free up to 5 to 6 hundred hospital beds every year.
The aim of the project is to identify patients with lung disorders that can be safely and effectively treated at home by a team of professionals while improving hospital efficiency.
According to the plan patients return home within 3 days in hospital and remain under the care of a Respiratory Consultant for the following fortnight.
A specialised nurse and or physiotherapist make regular visits and telephone calls to ensure a high standard of patient care.
Consultant Respiratory Physician, Dr Robert Rutherford says the new programme will mean patients will be less exposed to infections.
