The regional director of operations at the HSE West says efforts will be made to reduce the current taxi spend.

Overall spending for the region last year was 4.2 million euro.

2 point 5 million of this amount was spent on taxis for patients in Galway, with 41 thousand euro spent on taxis for staff.

The majority of these taxis were for dialysis patients, whose appointments do not lend themselves to bus schedules.

John Hennesy told a meeting of the regional health forum that savings of around 220 thousand euro on taxi spend were made this year, and that efforts would continue to get a better deal in 2013.
