HSE WEST ADMITS TO 9 MONTH BCG VACCINE SHORTAGE

Date Published: 26-Jun-2008

The HSE West has admitted it had no supplies of the BCG vaccine for most of the past school year.

Supplies of the Tuberculosis vaccine suddenly stopped last September due to a problem with the manufacturing plant in Denmark.

BCG supplies only became available in May, leaving the HSE West with only one month to get all 6th class pupils vaccinated against TB before the summer holidays.

The HSE has confirmed it’s now made plans to have any schoolchildren who have not yet been immunised vaccinated over the summer.

Pupils will be called to a clinic held at a location most suitable to the families involved.

However, Senator Fidelma Healy Eames says 6th class students at LisheenKyle National School have not been given the BCG vaccination for the past THREE years.

The Fine Gael Senator is concerned that this is happening in other schools across Galway as well.
