The HSE is expected to release its own results later today of water tests taken at Grattan Beach in Salthill.

The beach has been closed to swimmers since Wednesday after high levels of the E coli bacteria were detected in routine bathing water samples, within half a mile of the Mutton Island sewage treatment plant.

Yesterday, Galway City Council described as ‘encouraging’ further water tests taken at Grattan Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

The preliminary result of the sample taken showed that E-coli levels are well below the EU mandatory permitted levels.

These results must be confirmed by the HSE today, and the beach remains a non swim area until full water quality is restored.
