HSE moves to reassure patients on Galway mental health services
Galway bay fm newsroom – The HSE is moving to reassure the public over mental health services in Galway ahead of a protest at the Dáil over the closure of the Ballinasloe unit.
It maintains that just 7 beds will be taken out of the Galway Roscommon mental health service following the closure of the 22 bed acute care mental health unit.
By 2015, a 50 bed unit at Galway University Hospital is expected to open and there are already 22 beds in Roscommon.
The planned closure of the Ballinasloe unit will also take place on a phased basis, and there is no threat to staff as a result of this move.
A protest will take place outside the Dáil tomorrow and follows on from a 1 thousand strong protest in Ballinasloe on Sunday.
Demonstrators argue the closure will put pressure on services that are already streched in Galway and Roscommon.
