That’s according to the clinical director of mental health services in Galway Dr.
Last week, a group of GPs from East Galway called on the Minister for Health to carry out an independent review of the decision which they described as ‘deplorable’
The phased closure of the 22 bed unit began last week with the transfer of 5 beds to the acute psychiatric unit at UHG.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Dr Amanda Burke says it’s not about cost saving but investment, while the ‘vision for change’ policy is in line with best international practice.
She says the decision to close the unit was reviewed by several clinicians before it was signed off at Government level.
