HSA probe death at Sportsground

The Health and Safety Authority are continuing their investigation into the death of a construction worker at the Sportsground on College Road this week.

The man has been named as Declan Byrne, who was in his late 20s and from Ballyhaunis in Co. Mayo. Mr Byrne has been working on the construction of a new fitness centre for the Connacht rugby team when he was struck on the head by a steel beam at around 1.15pm on Wednesday. Mr Byrne died instantly.

The scene was preserved for a Garda technical examination and an inspector from the Health and Safety Authority North West region has examined the scene. The deceased was removed to University Hospital Galway shortly after 4pm for a post mortem examination.
