How to banish the September blues

The theme music for the RTE soap Glenroe, starring Mary McEvoy and the late Mick Lally as Biddy and Miley Byrne, signalled the onset of that Sunday night dread for a generation of us.

Having spent much of our year in lockdown desperately looking forward to summer and being released from the confines of our homes, there may be an unusually bad case of the ‘Glenroes’ this September. Many have real fears about returning to the workplace, parents and guardians face the huge financial burden of getting children back to school and the inevitable stress of juggling school, work and home life.

With Christmas looming on the horizon, managing finances may be enormously daunting. The days are already getting shorter hailing the ominous onset of winter – little wonder we may feel overwhelmed by September. Behavioural therapist with Perspectives Ireland Yvonne Barnes-Holmes believes our daily lives are probably fuller than they really should be.

“As we say goodbye to summer and re-enter our routines in September, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and ask yourself if you really need to squeeze all that stuff into each day. It’s a sobering reflection, but if it was your last day alive, is that how you would spend it?”

Her colleague, behavioural scientist Dr Ciara McEnteggart, says September is like another new year.

“It marks the beginning of the new school year, routines resume, and many food and exercise regimes begin again after the ease of the summer months. As such, this time of year can bring with it a lot of anxieties about preparing for the winter months and the routines beginning again”.
