THE current Level 5 Covid restrictions are very challenging and are affecting so many people in so many different ways. In our combined efforts to stay safe and save lives, many people – especially older people – are experiencing emotions such as fear and loneliness.

In recent days, I was asked by a colleague to outline what five crime prevention tips I would give to the older person who may be cocooning or feeling more vulnerable.

Firstly, I think it’s important to highlight that older people become victims of crime much less than many of their younger neighbours, but it’s often the fear of crime that worries them more.

So, by adopting the following five tips you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

LOCK UP: Keep your doors locked, even when you are at home. By keeping your doors locked you’re not only keeping out the unwanted intruder, but also stopping friends and family arriving in unannounced when you are trying to cocoon and stay safe.

Recent burglary trends have shown that the unlocked front doors are the most common entry points for intruders. Remember there is no obligation on you to open the door to anyone, and never let strangers into your home.
