Host of former county greats help ease isolation for cocooning fans

Joe Connolly...one of the Galway legends at the end of a phone.

A host of Galway GAA legends are doing their bit to build a whole different sort of team spirit during the current pandemic – by making themselves available to talk to cocooning GAA fans over the next few weeks.

They include three-time All-Ireland winning manager Cyril Farrell, All-Ireland winning captain Ray Silke, two-time All-Ireland winning manager John O’Mahony and Joe Connolly, who famously captained Galway to All-Ireland success in 1980.

The initiative is the brainchild of Oranmore native Paul Byrnes, former Executive Editor of GAA with RTE Sport, together with the recently appointed ‘Community Champion’ for Galway City Brendan Mulry.

And the whole idea is to make life that little bit easier for those confined to their homes – and missing out on that weekly diet of Gaelic Games, particularly coming up to what should have been the start of the Championship.

That absence of sport is only adding to the isolation felt by so many – and this initiative aims to address that by bringing some of Galway’s finest stars into your own living room, albeit by phone.

“We are very lucky to have the likes of Cyril, John, Ray and Joe on board who have given us so many magical and memorable moments in the maroon and white,” said Paul.

If you would like to receive a call from one of our legends or would like to arrange a call on behalf of a family member or friend just contact your ‘Community Champion’ Brendan Mulry on 087 2194243.
