Eoin Horan’s goal in the sixth minute of injury time helped Killimor reach their first county final since 2010 as they pulled off a shock against fierce rivals Meelick/Eyrecourt. Killimor are now just one win away from a first county title since 1984 as they come up against Moycullen in the final.

From a Killimor perspective, the events in Duggan Park on Saturday afternoon were better than what any supporter could possibly have scripted as they struck late to win after the sides were level 13 times throughout the contest.

Meelick/Eyrecourt never seemed comfortable as they were hassled and harried by a Killimor side who executed the defensive part of the game to perfection. Their hooking, blocking and willingness to fight for every breaking ball could only be admired.

Meelick/Eyrecourt were not to be found wanting in these departments either but for a side who many would say possessed the greater firepower, their forwards were simply unable to engineer space up front.

There was a real derby feel to this game as both sides were desperate for bragging rights and more importantly a county final berth. Despite Fr Joe Walsh’s, an amalgamation of both these sides at underage, winning a Minor B1 county final recently, the two East Galway sides produced a contest bristling with passion and intensity.

This game was destined to head to extra-time with the sides deadlocked at 0-16 apiece. However, Killimor goalkeeper Sean O’Grady sent a free from inside his own ’65 into enemy territory with Horan managing to gather possession and rifle an unstoppable effort to the net.
