It’s hoped the necessary funds will be secured to ensure a community playground in Athenry is reopened.

The facility near Athenry Castle was closed on Monday (Nov 11) following safety concerns raised by Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins.

It requires repair work which is estimated to cost in the region of six thousand euro.

The playground voluntary group has held discussions with council officials as says the closure of the facility is an interim measure while funding and support is arranged.

Cllr Peter Feeney is a member of the local voluntary committee and says it was a regrettable decision to have to close the playground
