Hooker sinks at Cruinniu

Disaster was narrowly averted when a Galway hooker — with a crew of eleven on board — sank in seconds close to Kinvara Pier during the weekend’s Cruinniu na mBad festival.

But the fact that all eleven on board were wearing life-jackets — and that two rescue dinghies were in close proximity to offer assistance — prevented any injury or loss of life.

The Morning Star sank in 40 feet of water on Sunday afternoon shortly after the Galway Hooker Race (Ras na mBad Mora) had begun in glorious sunshine and in good sailing conditions.
