Homeless ‘hubs’ set to get first tenants in January
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The modular housing ‘hubs’ for homeless families planned for a site behind Westside library are not expected to get their first tenants until the end of January – around five months behind the original schedule.
Galway City Council confirmed this week that the 17 units will be delivered to the site in two phases later this month, and it is hoped to have them constructed by Christmas.
The units – which will range between 50 and 70 square metres in size – will be delivered by lorry in ‘flatpack’ form and will be put together on site.
The €2 million scheme – funded by the Department of Housing –will be a mix of 15 two- and three-bed hubs and a further two units will be used for management to have a 24-hour presence on the site.
Ground works are continuing on the site at the moment ahead of the deliveries, and the units will then have to be constructed and connected to services.
The units will then have to be furnished by the Peter McVerry Trust – which will be managing them – and they are expected to get their first tenants towards the end of January.
