Hit Abbey play ‘B for Baby’ visits Town Hall Theatre
Date Published: {J}
The Abbey Theatre Company will present Carmel Winters’ critically received play B for Baby at the Town Hall Theatre Galway from Tuesday next, October 4 to Saturday, October 8. It’s as part of a nationwide tour of Ireland, which is taking in 14 venues.
B for Baby is directed by Mikel Murfi and stars Louis Lovett (as B and Brian) and Michele Moran (as D and Mrs C) who showcase their acting talents, playing two roles each.
In the play, Mrs C wants a baby and not a Christmas tree. B wants ‘a real hairdresser’s scissors’ and a wife. D wants a snow globe and a ‘big head of dirty auld curls’. All of them want their own place in the world. And if they can’t find it, they’ll create one of their own.
The audience joins B and D in the care home where they are residents, and where Mrs C is a carer, on their special – ‘very fecking special’ – journey towards happiness.
B for Baby, which won The Irish Times Best New Play award in 2010, was described by The Daily Telegraph as a ‘wonderful bundle of perturbing laughs’.
The author, Carmel Winters studied Drama and English at Trinity College Dublin where she was awarded several prizes for outstanding academic achievement. Her debut film, Snap, which she wrote and directed, received its world premiere at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York and went on to collect the Variety Critics’ Choice Award at the Karlovy-Vary Film Festival.
B for Baby was Carmel Winters’ first play at the Abbey Theatre and her first full-length play to be professionally produced. The set and costume design is by Sabine Dargent and lighting design by Paul Keogan.
