Historic house may be linked to museum

THE future of one of the city centre’s landmark historical buildings will be unveiled when Galway City Council publishes a long-awaited report on Comerford House in the coming months.

The Council is currently deliberating over the contents of a preliminary assessment it received from the National Building Agency (NBA) of the old Galway City Museum, Comerford House, at Fishmarket Square.

The Council’s Heritage Officer and engineers hope to bring forward recommendations on Comerford House, based on the assessment, to City Councillors later this year – it could contain recommendations to extend the historic building and link it in with Galway City Museum.

The NBA was commissioned by the Council in February 2008 to establish the cultural significance of Comerford House and its heritage value to Galway in the context of the City Wall and Fishmarket Square.
