Hip hop and comedy on menu
Date Published: 12-May-2011
Limerick hip-hop duo The Rubberbandits bring their hybrid of hip hop and comedy to the stage of the Róisín Dubh for an eagerly anticipated gig this Saturday night.
The controversial act gained notoriety and acclaim in equal measure last year with the release of the expletive-laden single, Horse Outside, which got over six million hits on YouTube and climbed the charts to register at Christmas number two.
A second single, I Wanna Fight Your Father, was launched last February and fans have been given to understand that there is an album in the pipeline and set for release before too long. Within 24 hours of release, their second single had garnered more than 170,000 views on YouTube.
The collective star of the duo – who have adopted the catchy names Mr Chrome and Blind Boy Boat Club – has continued to rise and they have won awards for both their music and their comedy. They have performed at both the Bulmers Comedy Festival and Electric Picnic, and have played in support of Alabama 3, Super Extra Bonus Party and Ice Cube.
This year, they were named by entertainment.ie as Best Irish Act, beating competition from the likes of Villagers, Fionn Regan and The Script.
The Rubberbandits play the Róisín Dubh at 9pm on Saturday, May 14. Tickets cost €15. DJ KC (Today FM) and DJ Ferg also provide entertainment on the night.
