High flying Galwegians pull off fine win in Limerick

CONNACHT clubs were expected to struggle in All Ireland League action last weekend with the clash with the British and Irish Cup taking a lot of front line players from the three squads in Division 1b and while it certainly had a negative effect, Galwegians bucked the trend of results with a huge win away to Garryowen.

The 10-6 triumph was built on a tireless work rate in defence – an area where there actually was room for improvement – as Doran McHugh’s try and John Cleary’s five points with the boot proved enough to get another win in an incredible season and keep them seven points clear at the top of the second division in Irish club rugby.

It wasn’t a good weekend elsewhere with Eoghan O’Reilly’s try and Ross Keller’s penalty not enough for Buccaneers in a 23-8 loss to second placed Buccaneers at Dubarry Park, while Corinthians lost 14-12 at home to Ul Bohemians having led 12-0. A penalty try and a five pointer from Darin Classens had them in control, but late tries gave the Limerick men a key win.

Bayonne

The busy run of fixtures continues for Connacht’s professional squad as they travel to the Basque Country in the south west of France to face Bayonne in the Challenge Cup on Saturday evening at (7.45) needing a win to keep their hopes of topping the pool alive

Pat Lam is expected to make wholesale changes for the trip in a bid to balance resources ahead of a hectic Christmas schedule that starts six days later with a trip to the RDS in Dublin to face Leinster. a side they haven’t beaten away from home since 2002.

The Connacht Eagles take to the field at the Sportsground on Saturday against Bristol in the British and Irish Cup (kick off 2.30). Many of their players are in line for senior call ups which will stretch resources, but in turn provide opportunities for some young emerging squad members to get a run out in the final pool game as Nigel Carolan’s men look for a second win.
