CITY TRIBUNE
High-energy gig in store from intriguing Icelandic outfit JFDR
After the noise and energy of the Arts Festival, August can be a quieter month in Galway city. But the month’s music schedule is lit up by a show by JFDR in Roisin Dubh next Thursday, August 23. JFDR is a project helmed by Iceland’s Jófríður Ákadóttir.
Ákadóttir, who was born in 1994, is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of considerable skill. She released her debut album, Brazil, last year and it’s worth seeking out – especially if you enjoy the work of her compatriot, Bjork.
JFDR’s debut has echoes of the Icelandic superstar’s work, but her voice is more restrained. The bleeps, beeps and minimal beats that make Bjork’s work so intriguing in places can be heard on Brazil, but the JFDR project has its own voice and sound too. Higher State is a beautiful tune, with its layered vocals playing out over a melodic piano and some dissonant sounds. Ákadóttir’s father is a composer and musician too and she was part of several other projects before getting JFDR off the ground.
Earlier this year, JFDR released White Suns Live, a three-track EP which features songs from Brazil, re-recorded with just strings. It’s also a beguiling listen.
Doors for next week’s show are at 8pm, tickets €10.
