Western workers are off work for longer than their national counterparts.

Workers in Galway, Clare, Roscommon and Mayo take eight and a half to nine sick days off a year on average, with a 3.9 per cent rate of absenteeism.

A report by the Small Firms Association reveals that the national average comes in at 8 days a year, with absenteeism costing companies 793 million euro per annum.

Over five million days were lost to small businesses.

Call centre staff take the most sick days at 14 days every year, and back injuries and stress are the most common reasons for people being off work.

Assistant Director with the SFA Avine McNally says it’s a huge problem for small companies.
