Henry Street hotel won’t impact traffic

Plans for an upmarket €50 million hotel on the Connacht Laundry site in ‘the West’ will be boosted if Galway City Council introduce more one-way streets in the area. The backers of the major project have told planners the hotel will have no real impact on traffic in the area over the first decade of operation.

However, according to a newTraffic Impact Assessment submitted as part of the plan, Cooke’s Corner will be hit by an increase in traffic jams by 2020. “In the initial eight to 10 years, the proposed development will have no significant impact, but by 2020, it will be adding approximately 12% to average peak hour delays at Cooke’s Corner. “However, with or without the development, this junction will become seriously congested by then, with average peak hour delays of up to five minutes per vehicle on some approaches.

This will be due to normal traffic rather than the hotel development. “There will be some mitigation due to the Galway City Outer Bypass which will divert east/west traffic (and east/north traffic) away from the city centre, but there will also be the need for positive traffic management measures by Galway City Council designed to ease congestion at Cooke’s Corner and on adjacent streets,” the traffic assessment reads.
