Hennelly seals win with last-gasp free
Galway 1-11
Tipperary 0-13
Eanna O’Reilly at Duggan Park
The Galway senior camogie team came through a very testing encounter against Tipperary in Ballinasloe on Saturday afternoon, to record a one-point victory and their third win from three national league games.
In a very intense affair, Galway centre forward Rebecca Hennelly kept her cool late in the game to nail two pressure frees, which saw the Tribeswomen take the spoils on the day.
The visitors brought great energy and physicality to the contest, and Galway had to fight every inch to secure the win. The All-Ireland champions showed their experience and composure in the fourth quarter, outscoring Tipp by 1-4 to 0-1, to edge ahead for the first time but crucially, at the most decisive time of the game.
The main post-match talking points were two decisions from referee John Dermody which went against Tipperary, much to the annoyance of their vocal travelling supporters. However, the 16th minute red card awarded to Casey Hennessy for a strike on Aoife Donohue was certainly the correct decision from the Westmeath referee.
Similarly, the decision to award a free to Galway in second-half injury-time, after Tipp’s Claire Hogan had collided with Sarah Dervan, was also the correct call. Dermody was consistent in penalising players for barging in possession throughout the match, and this was simply another example of it.
