Date Published: 11-Dec-2007

A report on the Inquiry into abuse at the Brothers of Charity residential centre at Kilcornan in Clarinbridge and the Holy Family School in Renmore has made several recommendations

The 176 page, ten-chapter report which looks into claims of sexual and physical abuse at the two premises, was published today [11/12]

It reveals that a total of 21 complaints were made by current or former clients of the Brothers of Charity

These allegations were made against 18 individuals – 11 brothers, 4 lay members of staff and 3 past service users during the period 1965 to 1998

Of those 18 individuals, 2 were convicted, 8 were deceased at the time of the Inquiry and the remainder are no longer involved with the provision of services to vulnerbale clients with the Brothers of Charity

There has been much criticism about the length of time it took to complete the report as it was first commissioned in 1999 by the then Western Health Board

Laverne McGuinness, National Director for Primary, Community and Continuing Care says there were many issues to deal with, which delayed the process

This evening the Brothers of Charity have released details of a helpline number for anyone who has concerns connected with the publication of this report on abuse allegations
