The Nirvana tribute band Negative Creeps will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Nevermind when they come to Monroe’s Live on Friday, October 7.  The Newry-based tribute group aim to celebrate one of the most seminal albums in popular music by tearing through every note of it. Fans of the Seattle grunge trio can also expect to hear other songs that span the band’s short but brilliant career.

Although it was the band’s second studio album, Nevermind is the record that launched Kurt Cobain into the stratosphere.

From its very first note – that opening riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit – it was clear that listeners were in the presence of greatness. Cobain’s voice, and supreme songwriting ability, set that record apart. The mantle of superstar is one Cobain struggled with, but it’s one he deserved.  Nirvana shook up popular music, forever.

They followed up Nevermind with the more abrasive, but still startling, In Utero. Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies confirmed Cobain’s ear for the anthemic, while Penny Royal Tea is  the work of a master. Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance showed their songs stood up, even when the feedback and David Grohl’s thunderous drums were stripped back.

Kurt Cobain’s suicide saw music lose a raw, real and supreme talent. This show will seek it celebrate his legacy.

Doors for the tribute show are at 11pm, tickets €10/€8.
