The Health Minister says he wants the HSE investigation into the death of Savita Halappanavar to stand up to the ‘scrutiny of the world’.

James Reilly says he doesn’t want the family of the 31 year-old left in limbo, but he insists it’s important that the report into her death be thorough.

Savita was 17 weeks pregnant when she died from septicemia at University Hospital Galway last month – her husband claims she was refused a termination.

The HSE will appoint an independent, external expert to investigate her death.

Minister Reilly says he is also considering a separate, HIQA report, but it’s important not to ‘crowd’ the situation.
