Headford Lace in the spotlight

Published

on

This wrought iron bench, a tribute to Headford Lace, will be included in the walking tour.

Forgot Me Not, a specially commissioned video installation by artist, Jojo Hynes will be projected onto a Headford building from 8pm this Friday September 20, for Culture Night.

The installation, created in collaboration with the Headford Lace Project, commemorates the 13 Headford girls aged 15-19, who were given assisted passage to Australia between 1848 and 1850 – a dark time in Irish history.

Reviving the forgotten skills of lacemaking is central to the project’s vision and there are still some places in the Beginners’ Bobbin Lace Workshop this Sunday from 10am-4.30pm and Improvers’ Bobbin Lace Workshop on Saturday, from10am-12.30pm. These will take place at the Anglers Rest Hotel, led by bobbin lacemaker, Jackie Magnin. Email headfordlace@gmail.com or phone 087 6193870 for more information.

Headford Lace Project members and other craftspeople have created more than 100 bonnets to remember the many Irish girls transported to Australia. These will form part of Irish Roses: Brideship Lasses and Roses from the Heart, two art projects conceived by Tasmanian artist, Dr Christina Henri. She will attend a special Bonnet Ceremony at St Fursa’s Hall, Headford at 3pm this Saturday where the bonnets will be presented to her. Afterwards, Dr Henri will give a talk entitled Using Art to Lift the Veil of Amnesia at 4pm in the Anglers Rest Hotel.
