Harpist in free lunchtime show at City Library
Harpist Kathleen Loughnane is the guest artist at Galway Music Residency’s next Lunchtime @ The Library Concert on Tuesday next, June 4 at 1.10pm. Ms. Loughnane will perform a selection of music by harpers of the 17th and 18th centuries and will also discuss their music. This free event takes place at Galway City Library on St Augustine Street.
Tipperary born Kathleen Loughnane, a long-time Galway resident, is one of Ireland’s leading harpists. In 1990 she co-founded the group Dordán, which performs a distinctive mix of Irish traditional and Baroque music. Dordán won the 1993 traditional Music Award in the Irish Entertainment Awards and the group has toured extensively at home and abroad.
Both with Dordán and as a solo musician, Kathleen has performed and taught in Ireland and at major festivals in the US, Japan and throughout Europe, including the Boston College Gaelic Roots Festival, at the Edinburgh International Harp festival and the Copenhagen Harp festival. She received funding from the Arts Council of Ireland for her work on research into the music of the Harpers of the 17th and 18th Centuries and recently received a Deis grant to research the Music MSS of piper and collector Pádraig O’Neill (1765-1832).
The Galway Ensemble in Residence, ConTempo Quartet will return to the concert series in July and August with a special family programme. Monthly performances will take place on the first Tuesday of each month from 1.10pm to 1.50pm in Galway City Library.
