Hall of Fame for Molloy and Geoghegan
City native Claire Molloy has been inducted into the Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Hall of Fame, just months after announcing her retirement from international rugby.
The former Connacht flanker, who still plays club rugby for Wasps in England, is joined on this year’s honours list by former Connacht winger, Simon Geoghegan, who is also been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Molloy (33) was capped 74 times at senior level by Ireland over the course of a 12-year international career, starting with her debut in 2009 when she came on as a replacement for Sinead Ryan in the 47th minutes of Ireland’s 7-5 win over France in Meath in the opening game of that year’s Women’s Six Nations Championship.
She was an integral part of a team that won a Grand Slam in 2013, two Six Nations Championships and Ireland’s first victory over New Zealand in 2014. She also captained both the 15s and 7s teams during her career.
“To follow in the footsteps of my former teammate and captain, Fiona Coghlan and be inducted into the Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Hall of Fame is an incredible honour for me,” said Molloy, who works as a doctor in a Welsh hospital.
“I was lucky enough to be awarded as the Women’s Player of the Year in 2018 and to be recognised once again by the Rugby Writers of Ireland is an absolutely amazing feeling,” said the player who was also named as the Ireland Women’s Player of the Year in 2012, and as the Galway Sports Star for Women’s Rugby in 2012, 2013, and 2018.
