Half of all stray dogs in Galway City being put down

Galway City is no place to be a stray dog – almost half of those seized by the City Council are put down.

But homeless mutts stand a much better chance of survival – and the possibility of being placed in a new home – if they are picked up in the county area.

Of 166 dogs brought to the city pound last year, almost half, or 78, were destroyed. Another 76 were re-homed and 12 were transferred to animal welfare groups.

By contrast, the vast majority of stray dogs seized in County Galway last year were transferred to animal welfare groups, a new report shows.

Just 35 of the total of 308 animals that were either seized by the county council or surrendered to them were put to sleep.

Most of them, 242, were transferred to animal welfare groups.
