Growing Educate Together school gets new temporary home in Galway

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – The Galway Educate Together Secondary School is to move to a new home in the heart of the city for two years while the search continues for their permanent base.

The multi-denominational school, which will have four years of classes, will transfer from its current building at Grianach House, Murrough, to the school in Newtownsmyth recently vacated by Our Ladiy’s College.

That all-girls’ school this year merged with St Mary’s College and moved to their campus, creating the newest mixed post-primary school called Coláiste Muire Máthair. It was formerly the home of the Mercy Secondary School, which in turn merged with the Presentation.

The Principal of Educate Together, Sarah Molloy, had been waiting some time to hear from the Department of Education about where they would move to. Last week she had organised a meeting between parents and local politicians in a bid to highlight the urgency of the situation.

“It’s a really positive development. Students were thrilled, parents delighted and teachers are relieved to have a plan in place. We will have Transition Years for the first time next year, so having the city on our doorstep presents many possibilities and opportunities that we will be now able to avail of,” she stated.
