Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Galway-Roscommon Education and Training Board is expected to spend nearly two million euro on rent in the coming years for a building it does not use.
GRETB has a lease on a property in the city that will not expire until 2027, but the organisation has not used the building in over a decade.
The Hynes Building on St Augustine Street was the former headquarters of the Co Galway VEC until 2004.
According to the Irish Examiner, the current lease started in 1992 and does not contain any break clauses, but the training board is recouping over 25 thousand euro a year by sub-letting part of the building.
GRETB is paying an annual rent of over 88 thousand euro on the property, meaning it will spend over €1.9m in rent from the time it stopped using the building until the lease expires.
