Greenway from Dangan to Cathedral a step closer to becoming a reality
Date Published: 19-Mar-2013
THE greenway path for pedestrian and cyclists – that will link Dangan to the Cathedral via the University – will take a step closer to the funding stage over the coming months with the completion of design work on the project.
A figure of €102,000 has been allocated to complete the design work for the project and to provide an overall construction delivery schedule.
The route – running in its entirety through the grounds of NUI Galway – forms part of the overall Galway to Clifden Cycle Route.
When the design study work is completed later this year, a joint application for funding will be made by the City Council and NUI Galway.
The scheme aims to provide a ‘high quality’ cycle/pedestrian route, segregated from motorised vehicles and providing a direct route from Galway city centre through NUI Galway.
Part of the project involves the construction of an underpass of the N6 roadway just West of the Corrib, which will accommodate some service vehicles to the College, as well as cyclists and pedestrians.
A spokesman for the City Council said that the Dangan Greenway route was a very exciting and imaginative one for the city and fitted in with the policy of providing transport alternatives to the private car.
“This is designed to integrate with the public transport system and it will also be a very attractive route option for pedestrians and cyclists,” said the City Council spokesman.
He added that the design work plan would be undertaken and completed this year, hopefully clearing the way for overall funding to be provided for the project.
