Greenfields does the double over Galway HC
Greenfields Hockey Club got the better of local rivals Galway Hockley Club on the double last weekend, wining both games between the clubs in the Connacht Senior Hockey League.
The Greenfields 1sts recorded a 3-0 win over Galway 1sts; while Greenfields also came out on tops in the clash of the two clubs’ second string sides, with Greenfields edging home by the odd goal in five.
The two clubs’ 1sts went into the game having won their opening matches, and it was Galway who started the brighter, but Greenfields soon settled and scored twice in the first-half through Trish Garett and Alice Meagher, and they wrapped up the win with a third goal, Mary Healy scoring in the second half.
The clash of the 2nds sides was as good a game, and finished much closer on the scoreboard. Carmel Heery opened the scoring early in the first-half for Greenfields, and with Elaine Hall controlling things for Greenfields in midfield with the support of Siobhan Divilly and Kate Hennessy, it wasn’t long before Sinead Minihan made it 2-0 to Greenfields following a counter-attack.
Galway looked dangerous and continued to put the pressure on the Greenfields defence with good attacking moves from Gemma Rhatigan, Leah Casey and Grace Melvin. The pressure paid off with Niamh O’Sullivan finding the net and minutes later Grace Melvin equalising making it 2-2. The winner arrived via a short-corner, and it was Greenfields who grabbed it, Clodagh Kennedy slotting home for a 3-2 win.
