The Arts Council has cut its Strategic Funding grants to two iconic Galway organisations this year – including the city’s flagship summer arts festival.

Galway International Arts Festival’s strategic funding grant for 2023, its 47th year, is €845,000. That represents a cut of about 7% or €65,000 less than last year’s allocation.

The biggest Galway recipient of Arts Council funding this year is Druid Theatre Company, which has been awarded €1m. But this is €172,400 or 17% less than what it the famous theatre group got in 2022.

The big winners locally were Macnas, Galway Community Circus and Baboró International Arts Festival for Children.
