Granny of the Year contest to aid Special Olympics

THE Special Olympics Ireland organisation has issued an appeal to the people of Galway to donate or get involved in any fundraising event to support Special Olympics in their own community.

The fundraising campaign, which runs from now until May, aims to raise €5 million nationally this year. The Galway launch took place in the Marriott Hotel where it was stressed that money raised locally will be going towards training Galway athletes.

There are approximately 1,600 people with an intellectual disability in Galway,but only 40% of them are athletes in Special Olympics Ireland, and SOI says money raised will go towards providing sports training and competition for those athletes and to reach out to those people in Galway not already involved.
