A vital transport link is now secured for Galway’s island communities for the next five years.

That’s according to Galway West Fine Gael TD Sean Kyne whose comments follow an announcement by government to award a contract for bus and ferry services for the Aran Islands to Aran Ferries Teo.

It covers the period from 1st November 2012 to 31st October 2017 and will provide for two return sailings daily, seven days a week, plus an additional sailing at midday on Sunday in the months of June, July and August.

The contract is worth in the region of 600 to 700 thousand euro and covers Inis Meain and Inis Oirr.

Deputy Sean Kyne says a decision on a separate contract for Inis Mor is expected to be decided in the coming weeks.

He told Galway Bay fm news that the contract demonstrates the level of commitment from government to maintain essential island transport services here.
