Gothic tale in Doyle Kennedy’s new album

Maria Doyle Kennedy closes the door behind her, shutting out the cacophony of her band rehearsing. She has just begun an Irish tour which takes in an eagerly awaited appearance at Róisín Dubh on Friday, June 15.
This marks the release of her new album Mutter, a daring and exciting offering that was fouryears in the making. The smokey voiced Dublin based singer and ex member of both the Hothouse Flowers and The Black Velvet Band explains the reason why it took this long.
“I have a family so I only have a certain amount of creative time to spend after I’ve looked after them. I can’t go away and hole up somewhere for six or eight or months and just make an album. I need to snatch a week a two here and there where I can. That kind of suited me I have to say.
“Kieran [her husband] produced it; he has mobile equipment. Whenever we could get a bit of time, and babysitting, we’d just set up in various friends’ houses around the country. Having the breaks was good because every time I had a little break and then came back to it I had really fresh ears and a clear perspective. I never got bogged down in it at any stage.”
