Gort falls to bottom 10 per cent in recession survey of towns
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gort has fallen to the bottom 10% of towns in the country in terms of rates of unemployment and emigration.
Research from Teagasc reveals that between 2006 and 2011 Gort lost 400 jobs and 12% of its population.
Factors for the decline include an over reliance on construction prior to the property crash, and an unsustainable increase in economic activity.
The research is based on the situation of about 300 towns across the country.
It shows that unemployment rose in rural areas at a faster rate compared to urban areas – 192% compared to 114%.
Professor Cathal O’ Donoghue from Teagasc says many Galway towns compared well in the the national town rankings.
