Gort café to give space to chat about menopause

Fiona McDonagh had encountered many women in her Lámh wellness clinic with symptoms they were unable to get treatment for, never mind get a diagnosis. She had some success treating these complaints – some extremely debilitating – with a mixture of acupuncture, sound bath therapy, mindful yoga, craniosacral therapy at her clinic located at the old Glynn’s Hotel in Gort.
But it was only after she did a yoga course in Dublin specifically geared to menopausal women two years ago that the subject really resonated with her.
It suddenly dawned on her that so many of the symptoms may stem from menopause – or perimenopause, which is what she terms the rocky stage before periods stop for a year and a woman has officially entered ‘the change of life’.
There are an astonishing 66 symptoms documented from menopause and symptoms differ in different parts of the world. Hot flushes are synonymous with women in the west, in Japan it’s shoulder pain while in India women complain about poor vision.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has now become hugely popular in Ireland and the UK after the subject received the attention of RTE’s Liveline here and TV host Darina McCall across the pond. But it’s a little used medication in places like India where women experience menopause five years earlier on average.
