SIGNIFICANT progress is reported on the first section of a planned cycleway linking Galway with Dublin.

The first section of the across Ireland cycleway is to be completed by the end of this year according to a report in “The Sunday Times” newspaper.

This first section, is from Maynooth to Mullingar, and work is said to be progressing steadily and is  due for completion by December when work will commence on the other phases of the project.

According to Sean O’Neill of the National Roads Authority (NRA) another section will link Dublin to the Midlands and then that route will be linked to Galway.

The cost of the 200 km route is estimated at 20 million Euro but the Department of Transport says there is not enough funding available to complete the entire path under the existing capital construction plan.

However as it is one of Minister Leo Varadkar’s “priority projects” consideration will be given to its completion under the next capital construction plan in 2016.
