Good Friday blues for United

IT turned out to be not such a good Friday for Galway United in Inchicore on Friday night as Tony Cousins’ side slumped to a second defeat in three games.

To cap a miserable night in Dublin 8, United had captain John Fitzgerald sent off for two yellow cards, while Wes Charles went off injured at half-time, leaving Cousins with a potential selection nightmare for the visit of high flying Shamrock Rovers to Terryland Park this coming Saturday night.

Fitzgerald got his marching orders in the 68th minute when, beaten for pace by Mark Quigley, he dragged back Pats’ goalscorer as he raced into the box. The former Irish U21 international had been booked for dissent 16 minutes earlier, and so he joins John Lester on the suspension list for this coming weekend.

With Fitzgerald went any hope of United matching their result at Richmond Park last June when two Derek Glynn goals saw them come from a goal behind to record a 2-1 win.

Friday night’s game was following a similar script — United were marginally on top when they fell behind against the run of play, but this time they couldn’t claw their way back into the game as Pats made it three wins on the trot to move two points clear as early pace setters in the Premier Division.
