Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway City Council has approved plans for a new retail and community building at The Claddagh.

The project, proposed by Cathríona Walsh, had garnered the support of the local community.

It’ll encompass changing a building at Upper Fairhill road from industrial use to a craft shop, garden centre and community room.

The new development is expected to create employment for an average of 15 local crafts people and two sales people.

In allowing the development to go-ahead, the City Council has imposed 17 conditions.

The planning permission will only extend until the end of 2016 and no manufacturing of crafts can be undertaken at the site.

Also the operation of the garden centre must be restricted to two days per week between Monday and Saturday.

The use of the building in the evenings for meetings must be restricted to local, not-for-profit groups.
